A White Week

Some weeks can turn out to have a theme...it just happened to be white this week!

An antique very long table runner with exquisite lace...very cheap because of the few little bites in it....straight into my collection

An op shop find for 50 c for the closet

A tiny sweet vintage crystal bridal headpiece for my collection...it still is attached to the long tulle veil which I need to detach

I know some people think there are no bargains on E bay anymore, but this ceramic Fossil watch in it's original tin was $20 !!!!! They retail for $200 +.....SCORE

Because we finished painting the last bedroom we could unpack a few more of our pictures. We took some photos Mr VL shot around Europe blew the up in black and white and bought IKEA frames. The large ones will have to wait till the living areas are painted white........SIGHHHH!

In the garden this week

A new flush growth of gardenias

We have had a week of cooler weather YAY.....but by tomorrow it's going to be over a century again at least the whole week. Although we lost our salad veg we have been trying to harvest as much as we could

The plums are still to sour to eat

Miss Henny Penny

Dame Nellie Melba
Enjoying the cool while it lasts

We cleaned up another garden bed neglected by the previous  owners  and dug up about 200 daffodil bulbs which we divided and replanted and mulched....roll on spring!
I bought 2 fabulous books for harvesting recipes for half price from the UK.LOVE THEM!

Hot,Hot,Hot...

Wow , what a week....6 hideous days of Hades (more about that later) ...too hot for leaving the house let alone thrifting. ( these are words I never thought I would write) Luckily I still have a couple of cuties I bought  a couple of weeks ago in the tiny country town of Palmer in their General Store which is also full of farm antiques

A cute little pill bottle for $2

A small green Vaseline glass jar $2 - probably held some sort of cream

We have had 6 days in a row over 43 degrees, the top being almost 46 on Thursday giving Adelaide the dubious status of the hottest major city in the world that day - uh huh....GREAT! (between 110 - 114)
As I write this the change arrived with a big electrical storm and there are still bushfires raging in the Barossa Valley
It was too scorching hot for my husband to have any customers in the garden Nursery so we decided to paint some more of our rooms (which have hideous light absorbing colours) in white
We have now finished 3 bedrooms, laundry, bathrooms and passage. Thank heavens for airconditioning

The passage was a ghastly shade of peach. This white is the same we used in our last house although we are not going to do the woodwork like last time

The laundry and bedrooms had already had all new wardrobes and cupboards in the same white installed

We still have all the big rooms to do - family , dining, entry, formal sitting and formal dining which are  yukky cocoa brown ..

The garden survival has been a mixed bag. We lost the lettuces, beans, heaps of seedlings ,pots of flowers. We put sheets on the tomatoes and the fruit trees are ok.

My girls were sprayed with water every couple of hours

This weekend the hundreds of white Meilland roses will have to be cut back as they were very scorched

The first day of heat and still fresh

This was taken at 7am and already a century

I had already harvested my David Austin roses and hung them up to dry

And these little sweeties " Crepescule " just made it before they scorched

The Good News and the Bad News

I'll start on a positive  note I think.....we have had a lovely Friday and Saturday poking around lots of interesting and dusty shops!
A trip to the city and a Vinnies op shop ...an old leather monogrammed large suitcase with nice moire silk navy lining for $10

A linen  fillet  crochet tea cloth for $2

We took a trip yesterday to  the Adelaide Hills town of Strathalbyn which has lots of antique markets.

I found 2 Victorian books  for my collection for $5 each

And a vintage fabric covered suitcase....up~cycled in the 70's for $6

Now for the bad news - since we moved in to this house in August we have spent most of our time in the garden ..putting in a vegetable garden, hatching our own chooks ,and loving restoring the orchard which most is almost ripe
Next week's weather forecast is for at least 6 days of 40 - 45  (104F - 113F) degree heat with no mention of a change in sight. We will probably lose most veg and fruit especially the plums, our young chooks are going to be a challenge . We may lose some of our new trees and all the roses will have to be cut right back.
We have tried to harvest all the veg, added a shade cloth roof over the chook run, watered, watered and watered and just hope there are bushfires up here

Picked most of the roses for drying

Watered the lawns

Harvested garlic and rhubarb
